9/17 Science Facilitators

The facilitators met at WGHS room 324 from 8:30 - 3:30.  The agenda is located here.


We set goals for the day:


We made edits to the timeline


Then published the timeline here (and below):

We then clarified content at each grade level and updated the Teacher Resource Center.

The team then clarified the MySci Pilot for each grade level and content area.  I emailed the schedule to the MySci team to finalize details.

Teachers then wrapped up the day working on dreaming up resources we would need and adding them to the Teacher Resource Center.

5/22 End of Year Report

Accomplishments of the 

K-8 Science and Social Studies Program

Science and Social Studies Facilitators


  • Established a CORE team (12 science, 10 Social Studies) that met and was paid for their time.
  • Established a “Virtual team” to stay in the loop and weigh in on virtual conversations, announcements, etc. (11 Science, 11 Social studies).  This is also the group that filled in when someone wasn’t able to attend.
  • Met 6 times
  • Finished Essentials and Learning goals for our current reality
  • Determined we were not aligned to Grade Level expectations
  • Piloted new Kit-sign up system

Science and Social Studies Vertical Team


  • Created biannual meetings for Science and Social Studies
  • Advertised, facilitated and communicated notes from the meeting to WG-Certified
  • Vision for the meetings influenced by participants

Science and Social Studies Facilitators


  • Eliminate the team as it currently exists
  • Due to the amount of curriculum work that needs to be created/accomplished shift to a focus with greater impact.
  • ½ day curriculum workshops for every level K-5
  • Keep Core and Virtual team
  • Focus on:
    • Science – Creating Essentials, Proficiency Scales and Learning experiences K-5 based on the Next Generation Science Standards
    • Social Studies – Creating Essentials, Proficiency Scales and Learning experiences K-5 based on the Missouri Social Studies Grade Level Expectations

Science and Social Studies Vertical Team


  • Find money to pay representatives to be there.
  • Establish representatives from each grade level and continue to invite everyone, similar to PDC model.
  • Collaboratively plan agenda with District leadership and Department Chairs
  • Meet quarterly, possible agenda items for Science to include:

    • Share learning experiences
    • Develop Mentorship model through identifying expertise

Science Program

  • Finalize Essentials and Proficiency Scales K-8 based on 08 GLEs

Office of Sci/SS


  • Spend ½ day every week in classrooms goal of 30 cumulative days spent in classrooms.
  • Become a Google Apps for Education “Qualified Individual”
  • Lead Flipped Teaching Workshop beginning January 14
  • Leverage Apple Distinguished Educator network for science and social studies experiences that enhance learning.

4/2 Office, Hudson, Steger

Started the day working on tasks:

Went over to hudson for Amazing MAP race (for review)

3/4 Clark, PDC

Spent the day at Clark Elementary, home of the Eagles!

Kindergarten

I watched Kindergarteners build some log cabins inspired by Abraham Lincoln.

2nd grade

I saw 2nd grade making timelines and shared with teachers about some online tools for creating a timeline.

Wax Museum Prep

2nd grade was working on their Wax museum presentations

Students research, make poster or timeline, write speech, press button for timeline
 I saw posters from students on their famous people they researched.  This research was a part of the speeches they prepared for their wax museum they will be having over the next couple of days.

Discussed the economics Old Webster project/unit
  • Discussed the terms: Good, service, consumer, producer
  • How to conduct and interview
  • Channel 4 connection
  • In the community on the 28th to get to local businesses

Discussed how we could move the project into the 21st century and make something for an authentic audience

Then discussed the ability for individual students or teams to make their own video to be displayed to an audience. Here's a tutorial:

More 2nd grade

Saw another 2nd grade class of student presentations for their "wax museum." It is so cool to "press the button" and watch the students come to life as their famous person. Here's an audio recording of one....







Science

Wrapped up the day in Science class they were working on ecosystems and habitats.
