1/29 Bristol day! iPad Training.

Spent the day at Bristol Elementary.  I was there to:

• See science or social studies lessons in action
• Help when/where you need it (not necessarily Sci/SS)
• Answer any technology questions you may have/want
• Help you log on to the NEW Curriculum server
• Have curriculum conversations about Science or Social Studies
• Share MAP data
• Talk about the Next Generation Science Standards
• Build stronger relationships.
• Be supportive and collaborative!

I saw 4th grade working on Circuits:

I then started to update my iPad for our after school session.  After downloading software, I ran into trouble...

I was unable to update due to ports being blocked on the WG network.  I figured this out using apple's support communities: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4467602?start=0&tstart=0

This made me miss James' Kindergarten class due to having to run to Bread Company to use their Wifi to update and restore software.  I went back there later...

After updating went back to Bristol.

Saw 5th grade REVIEW game:

Helped students in 4th grade hook up circuits.

 Played in Kindergarten to make a secret decoder necklace (Awesome!):

After work went home to attend NSTA Web Seminar: Using the NGSS Practices in the Elementary Grades, January 29, 2013

11/29 Treca Digital Academy, Apple Science iOs Training

I'm a day late on the post due to travel and lack of access to the web.  Please accept my apologies.

Spent the day at Treca Educational Solutions in Marion Ohio.

There I was training on the new full day training called "science iOs"

We used three piece of tech during the session, seen below:

The first piece was verier's labquest 2.  We were trained on how to use the device and the pH probe ware.  Learned how to pair it with a laptop or mobile device and harvet data.  We then used the date to create a media focused lab write up.  Some of the resources from the lab are below:

After investigating with the Labquest we turned our discussion to resources on the iPad.  We learned how to use the Bodelin Proscope.  This device syned with the AirMicroPad app to display and capture amazing images, seen below:

We then investigated the Leafsnap and Educreations apps.

The day was wrapped up discussing Mountain Lion Server and how it could be used in the traning and school networks to "turn in" resources from the iPad to the teacher's device.

11/1 DLT and UMSL

Spent the morning at Hixson with the DLT using a walkthrough form to discuss the implementation of the Art and Science of teaching

Afterwords met as a district to discuss what we saw what we noticed and how we will lead moving forward.

We also did a sorting activity with some themes from the common core and read the the introduction of the common core and looked for any AH-HAs that came out of it.

MY ELA AH-HA's were:

• The CCSS was in process for over a decade
• there are international ties to these expectations
• not meant to replace content standards but to supplement
• CCSS helps define general cross-disciplinary literacy expectations
• emphasized required achievements and left room for HOW these will be reached.
• teachers in all roles will be essential to meeting these standards
• distribution of literary and informational reading that changes at various grade levels
• NOT discussed in the CCSS
• What students should know but not what teachers should teach
• they do not describe all that could be taught
• do not define the nature of advanced work
• do not define the interventions or materials necessary
• they do not define the full range of supports that students may need
• the do not define the whole
• College and Career Ready means:
• Demonstrating independence
• Build strong content knowledge
• respond to varying demands
• comprehend and can critique
• value evidence
• use technology
• understand perspectives

I followed that meeting with the coordinators about the Nov 6th Common Core workshop.  We discussed the plan for te day and the outline of work to be completed.

After that I skipped lunch to attend a Keynote presentation by Joel Davies (more on Joel) from Apple.  He was presenting on "Flipping the classroom: Sticking the landing."

21st century learning is individualized learning - care of the whole person

Mission of apple: Define, create, and support the best possible learning environment.

Technology, pedagogy and content, at the center is the learning.

I got an A or a B because I could SPIT back out the facts

Learning today is like 16th century learning - 

It's the Qantas model

• Sit down
• face forward
• strap in
• turn of all portable electronic devices
• If you're lucky your trip will be relevant
• You may resume your life in a few hours

21st century learners - want their courses to be relevant, anytime, anywhere learning, comfortable with technology, active learners, safe fail environment, not necessarily traditional students

21st century learning spaces - 

• campfire - telling the oral tradition to anyone else…
• watering holes - mobile desks with desktop spaces
• cave - dorm room, solo learning spaces
• mountain top - put something out there, get feedback on it from peers and beyond

evolve the culture of learning

law of diffusion innovation - Techies, visionaries, pragmatists, conservatives, skeptics

What led to ball point pen to work in space.  Problem = Solution

Ask the question "what do we need?" and rushed to the easiest conclusion

Think before you flip

• Anywhere, any times class content
• High level class discussion and activities
• Let's build, do, and apply the learning
• Spent more time one-on-one
• PEAK of the roller coaster - chain to top, dread and excitement, gravity takes care of the rest
• highest common denominator - choices about how you flip, some will transfer, some will substitution
• 21st century assessment - SBG - all grades are temporary
• What's a textbook?
• You can't transform wight he lowest common denominator

• Build for different learning styles - 8 to 9 to 3 different ones
